Adreian Payne, a former Michigan State basketball star and NBA player, was killed. His age was 31.
The Orange County Sheriff's Office in Florida responded to a man shot call at 1:37 a.m. Payne was taken to a nearby hospital where he died.
Lawrence Dority, 29, was arrested on the scene for first-degree murder.
Payne, a Dayton, Ohio native, was a second-team All-Big Ten selection from 2010-14.
He finished his career as MSU's all-time leader in blocks (since Xavier Tillman and Marcus Bingham Jr.) and one of 10 Spartans with 1,200 career points and 700 career rebounds.
The 6-foot-10 forward befriended a young cancer patient from St. Johns, Lacey Holsworth, who became a fixture around the 2013-14 Spartans.
MSU won the Big Ten tournament in Indianapolis, and their friendship became a major national story during the Spartans' NCAA tournament run, which ended with an Elite Eight loss to Connecticut.
She died of neuroblastoma complications a week after the season ended, and Payne and his teammates paid emotional tribute to her at Breslin Center.
